Our Story
Nerstrand Elementary, the little school by the Big Woods, is a public K-5 elementary charter school located in a rural setting near Faribault, Minnesota.
155 students and their teachers join together in multi-age classrooms to discover project-based, hands-on learning that includes environment studies locally at the Big Woods State Park. Students participate in daily music and physical education instruction. Instrumental music lessons and band is offered to all 5th grade students. Students learn and serve through community related opportunities within the school.
We believe all children can and want to learn. Toward that goal, we take the Responsive Classroom approach to creating a safe, challenging, and joyful educational environment. Responsive Classroom seeks to teach students appropriate ways of getting along with each other as members of the community.
