Youth boards and other service learning projects provide opportunities for students to explore responsibility and commitment. Below are descriptions of some of these opportunities that exist at Nerstrand Elementary.
Learn & Serve Board
A student-led board of fourth and fifth graders that meet monthly with a staff representative to coordinate service learning projects for the school.
Peace Garden Committee
A group of fourth and fifth grade students that meet weekly with adult volunteer, Larry Richie, and staff representative to work on different aspects of the International Peace Garden on our school courtyard. They also act as Homeroom representatives to keep homerooms updated on the Peace Garden and get input from their homeroom peers on specific projects.
School Spirit Task Force
A K-5 multiage group of students who serve as homeroom representatives. They meet monthly first of all to decide on the different School Spirit days to celebrate and then to advertise and remind students about the School Spirit Days coming up.
A group of fourth and fifth grade students who serve as ambassadors to visitors by meeting with them and answering questions they may have or by having lunch with them. The Student Ambassadors help present to the Faribault School Board, our charter sponsor, the Annual Report and also present at the Peace Prize Festival each year.
Behavior Plan Task Force
A K-5 multiage group of students who serve as homeroom representatives. They meet in the fall of the school year to look at our Behavior Plan that is in effect and talk about needed changes or give it their seal of approval for the year. They will get input from their homeroom students if needed.
